In 2020, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of vanilla, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. The exports peaked at X tonnes in 2019, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, vanilla exports reduced markedly to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. The exports peaked at $X in 2019, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Saudi Arabia (X tonnes) was the main destination for vanilla exports from Vietnam, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, vanilla exports to Saudi Arabia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), fivefold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Saudi Arabia totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+X% per year) and Canada (+X% per year).

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for vanilla exports from Vietnam, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to Saudi Arabia stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-X% per year) and Canada (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average vanilla export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2019, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2020, the amount of vanilla imported into Vietnam shrank sharply to X tonnes, waning by -X% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tonnes. From 2018 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vanilla imports dropped significantly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2020, France (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of vanilla to Vietnam, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, vanilla imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X kg), twofold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+X% per year) and India (-X% per year).
