After two years of decline, shipments abroad of styrene-acrylonitrile (san) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers (in primary forms) increased by 7.4% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 535%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, styrene-acrylonitrile exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 406%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for styrene-acrylonitrile exports from Vietnam, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, styrene-acrylonitrile exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), sixfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China stood at +148.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+58.3% per year) and Thailand (+7.0% per year).

The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled +138.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+51.2% per year) and Thailand (+4.0% per year).

The average styrene-acrylonitrile export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 29% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Philippines ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, the amount of styrene-acrylonitrile (san) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers (in primary forms) imported into Vietnam surged to X tons, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. In general, imports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, styrene-acrylonitrile imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main suppliers of styrene-acrylonitrile imports to Vietnam, with a combined 82% share of total imports. China, Japan and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
