In value terms, exports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products shrank modestly to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tonnes) was the main destination for exports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products from Viet Nam, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tonnes), sevenfold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+X% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+X% per year).

In 2020, the average export price for raw steel and steel semi-finished products amounted to $X per tonne, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per tonne) and South Korea ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per tonne) and the Philippines ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2020, supplies from abroad of raw steel and steel semi-finished products decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports showed a sharp decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products reached $X in 2020. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes), China (X tonnes) and Japan (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of imports of raw steel and steel semi-finished products to Viet Nam, together accounting for X% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, India, the Netherlands and Austria, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in India, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
