Cashew Nut Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese cashew nut market fell to $X in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, approx. X ha of cashew nuts were harvested in Viet Nam; remaining constant against 2019 figures. In general, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cashew nut production reached the maximum at X ha in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, the harvested area failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, overseas shipments of cashew nuts decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2015, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, cashew nut exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

India (X tonnes) was the main destination for cashew nut exports from Viet Nam, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, cashew nut exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the U.S. (X tonnes), fivefold. The UK (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to India amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the U.S. (-X% per year) and the UK (+X% per year).

In value terms, the U.S. ($X), the UK ($X) and India ($X) constituted the largest markets for cashew nut exported from Viet Nam worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, India saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average cashew nut export price amounted to $X per tonne, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to India ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports reached $X in 2020. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
