Semiconductor Machinery Exports

Exports from the U.S.

Semiconductor machinery exports from the United States declined modestly to X units in 2023, almost unchanged from 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor machinery exports fell significantly to $X in 2023. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The exports peaked at $X in 2022, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X units), Costa Rica (X units) and Thailand (X units) were the main destinations of semiconductor machinery exports from the United States, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Costa Rica (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for semiconductor machinery exported from the United States were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.

Costa Rica, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the average semiconductor machinery export price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a significant decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Costa Rica ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2023, supplies from abroad of semiconductor machinery decreased by X% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2022, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, semiconductor machinery imports reduced to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

In 2023, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of semiconductor machinery to the United States, accounting for a X% share of total imports. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
