Paint And Coating Market Size in the U.S.

In 2020, the U.S. paint and coating market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption posted a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the market value increased by X% y-o-y. Paint and coating consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paint and coating production totaled $X in 2020. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2020.

Exports from the U.S.

In 2020, shipments abroad of paints and coatings decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, paint and coating exports contracted to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tonnes) was the main destination for paint and coating exports from the U.S., accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, paint and coating exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tonnes), sixfold. China (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2013 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico stood at +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (-X% per year) and China (-X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for paint and coating exported from the U.S. were Mexico ($X), Canada ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. Japan, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X the main countries of destination, Belgium saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average paint and coating export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the U.S.

Paint and coating imports into the U.S. shrank significantly to X tonnes in 2020, waning by -X% compared with the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2019, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, paint and coating imports contracted sharply to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Mexico (X tonnes), Liechtenstein (X tonnes) and Canada (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of paint and coating imports to the U.S., with a combined X% share of total imports.

From 2013 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Liechtenstein (+X% per year), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X), Liechtenstein ($X) and Mexico ($X) appeared to be the largest paint and coating suppliers to the U.S., together accounting for X% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the price for the UK ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
