Rice Market Size in Uruguay

For the second year in a row, Uruguay recorded growth in market revenue of rice, which increased by X% to $X in 2018. Overall, rice consumption posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the rice market attained its peak figure level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, consumption failed to regain its momentum.

Rice Production in Uruguay

In value terms, rice production dropped modestly to $X in 2018 estimated in export prices. In general, the total output indicated a resilient increase from 2007 to 2018: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, rice production increased by +X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when production volume increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, rice production reached its peak figure level at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Rice Exports

Exports from Uruguay

In 2018, after two years of growth, there was a significant decline in exports of rice, when its volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, rice exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2018, exports failed to regain their momentum.

In value terms, rice exports declined markedly to $X in 2018. In general, the total exports indicated measured growth from 2007 to 2018: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2018, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru (X tonnes), Iraq (X tonnes) and Brazil (X tonnes) were the main destinations of rice exports from Uruguay, together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Venezuela, Iran, Belgium, Costa Rica, Russia, Cuba, Senegal and Sierra Leone, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2018, the biggest increases were in Costa Rica, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for rice exported from Uruguay were Peru ($X), Iraq ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Venezuela, Iran, Belgium, Costa Rica, Cuba, Russia, Sierra Leone and Senegal, which together accounted for a further X Leone saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average rice export price stood at $X per tonne in 2018, jumping by X% against the previous year. Over the last eleven-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average export prices for rice reached their peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2018, the growth in terms of the average export prices for rice remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Senegal ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Imports

Imports into Uruguay

In 2018, the rice imports into Uruguay shrank significantly to X tonnes, falling by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, rice imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, rice imports reached their peak figure at X tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2018, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rice imports declined remarkably to $X in 2018. Over the period under review, rice imports, however, showed strong growth. Imports by Country

In 2018, Argentina (X tonnes) was the main supplier of rice to Uruguay, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, rice imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Paraguay (X tonnes), threefold.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Paraguay (+X% per year) and Brazil (+X% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Uruguay, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Paraguay ($X), with a X% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Paraguay (+X% per year) and Brazil (+X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2018, the average rice import price amounted to $X per tonne, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the rice import price, however, saw a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. In that year, the average import prices for rice reached their peak level of $X per tonne. From 2014 to 2018, the growth in terms of the average import prices for rice remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per tonne), while the price for Paraguay ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
