The U.S. hazelnut market declined significantly to $X in 2021, falling by -24.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate strong growth. Hazelnut Production in the U.S.
In value terms, hazelnut production reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Hazelnut production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
In 2021, the average hazelnut yield in the United States amounted to X tons per ha, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the yield increased by 45% against the previous year. The hazelnut yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Overall, the total harvested area indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut harvested area increased by +76.5% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 14% against the previous year. The hazelnut harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports from the U.S.
Hazelnut exports from the United States skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, rising by 27% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for hazelnut exports from the United States, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, hazelnut exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Canada (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +28.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+10.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-25.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for hazelnut exported from the United States were China ($X), Canada ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.
China, with a CAGR of +27.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, hazelnut export price increased by +45.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hazelnut Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, supplies from abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -8.2% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hazelnut imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the main supplier of hazelnut to the United States, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates (X kg), with a 1.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey amounted to +9.2%.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hazelnut to the United States, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.2% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey amounted to -1.3%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average hazelnut import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 74%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey amounted to $X per ton.
