The UK potato chips market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a mild slump. Potato chips consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato chips production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 17%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of potato chips decreased by -35.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 18%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, potato chips exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) was the main destination for potato chips exports from the UK, accounting for a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, potato chips exports to Nigeria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ireland (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Nigeria stood at +4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ireland (-4.8% per year) and France (+4.8% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for potato chips exported from the UK were Nigeria ($X), Ireland ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 60% share of total exports. The United States, the Netherlands, Germany and Yemen lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.
Yemen, with a CAGR of +23.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average potato chips export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the UK
Potato chips imports into the UK dropped markedly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -22.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, potato chips imports contracted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato chips to the UK, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, potato chips imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ireland (X tons), with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at -1.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-7.1% per year) and Ireland (-3.5% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato chips to the UK, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Belgium totaled +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+15.3% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average potato chips import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
