Tomato Market Size in Ukraine

In 2020, the Ukrainian tomato market decreased by -X% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. In 2020, the average tomato yield in Ukraine was estimated at X tonnes per ha, growing by X% on 2019. Overall, the yield indicated a resilient increase from 2007 to 2020: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, tomato yield increased by +X% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the average tomato yield hit record highs in 2020 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, approx. X ha of tomatoes were harvested in Ukraine; approximately mirroring the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to tomato production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2020, shipments abroad of tomatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the maximum at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato exports declined to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tonnes) was the main destination for tomato exports from Ukraine, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Poland (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (-X% per year) and Poland (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for tomato exported from Ukraine were Poland ($X), Moldova ($X) and Belarus ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Estonia and Latvia, which together accounted for a further X terms of the main countries of destination, Estonia (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average tomato export price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2020, tomato imports into Ukraine surged to X tonnes, growing by X% on 2019. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, tomato imports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, imports showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2020, Turkey (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Ukraine, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tonnes), sevenfold. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Poland ($X per tonne) and Turkey ($X per tonne), while the price for Azerbaijan ($X per tonne) and Belarus ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.
