For the fifth year in a row, the Ukrainian sorghum market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption continues to indicate modest growth. Over the period under review, the average sorghum yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The sorghum harvested area in Ukraine reached X ha in 2022, surging by X% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by X%. The sorghum harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, the amount of sorghum exported from Ukraine skyrocketed to X tons, rising by X% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Israel (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of sorghum were imported into Ukraine; shrinking by X% on 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Moldova (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sorghum to Ukraine, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, sorghum imports from Moldova exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Moldova totaled X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (X% per year) and France (X% per year).

In value terms, France ($X), the United States ($X) and Argentina ($X) were the largest sorghum suppliers to Ukraine, together comprising X% of total imports. These countries were followed by Moldova, which accounted for a further X%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Moldova, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
