Potato Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian potato market expanded rapidly to $X in 2020, picking up by X% against the previous year. In 2020, the average yield of potatoes in Ukraine stood at X tonnes per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The potato yield peaked at X tonnes per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, the yield failed to regain the momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, approx. X ha of potatoes were harvested in Ukraine; therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production attained the maximum at X ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2020, shipments abroad of potatoes decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2014 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, potato exports shrank significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports posted a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tonnes) was the main destination for potato exports from Ukraine, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tonnes), fourfold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+X% per year) and Egypt (+X% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for potato exports from Ukraine, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Moldova ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belarus amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+X% per year) and Egypt (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average potato export price amounted to $X per tonne, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated moderate growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, potato export price increased by +X% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average export prices attained the maximum at $X per tonne in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2020, the amount of potatoes imported into Ukraine rose sharply to X tonnes, picking up by X% compared with 2019. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato imports soared to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Belarus (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Ukraine, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tonnes), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by the Netherlands (X tonnes), with a X% share.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the price for Romania ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
