Cabbage Market Size in Ukraine

In 2022, the Ukrainian cabbage market decreased by less than X% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Cabbage consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cabbage Production in Ukraine

In value terms, cabbage production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average cabbage yield in Ukraine was estimated at X tons per ha, rising by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. The cabbage yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The cabbage harvested area in Ukraine fell to X ha in 2022, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cabbage production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Cabbage Exports

Exports from Ukraine

In 2022, approx. X tons of cabbage and other brassicas were exported from Ukraine; which is down by X% against 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Ukraine, with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova (X tons), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (X% per year) and Russia (X% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Ukraine, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belarus totaled X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (X% per year) and Russia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cabbage export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cabbage export price increased by X% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of X%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage Imports

Imports into Ukraine

For the fifth year in a row, Ukraine recorded growth in purchases abroad of cabbage and other brassicas, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cabbage imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a significant expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), North Macedonia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cabbage imports to Ukraine, together comprising X% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage suppliers to Ukraine were Poland ($X), North Macedonia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together comprising X% of total imports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Romania ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Moldova ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
