Tomato Market Size in Uganda

Over the period under review, the average tomato yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The tomato harvested area in Uganda shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, flattening at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the tomato harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uganda

Tomato exports from Uganda soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by X% on the previous year. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tomato exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Uganda, with a approx. X% share of total exports.

Tomato imports into Uganda fell remarkably to X tons in 2022, waning by X% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of tomato to Uganda, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), ninefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (X% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomatoes to Uganda, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with an X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (X% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average tomato import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
