Meat Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan meat market declined slightly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, consumption saw a mild contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Meat Production in Uganda

In value terms, meat production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a pronounced decline. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average meat yield in Uganda declined slightly to X kg per head, remaining constant against 2021. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. The meat yield peaked at X kg per head in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for meat production in Uganda shrank modestly to X heads, almost unchanged from the year before. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X%. Meat Exports

Exports from Uganda

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of meat, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) were the main destinations of meat exports from Uganda, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Rwanda ($X) constituted the largest markets for meat exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Jordan ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, meat imports into Uganda fell significantly to X tons, shrinking by X% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
