Fruit Market Size in Uganda

The Ugandan fruit market totaled $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a prominent increase. Fruit consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Fruit Production in Uganda

In value terms, fruit production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. Fruit production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of fruits in Uganda reduced modestly to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the average fruit yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of fruits were harvested in Uganda; flattening at 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to fruit production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Fruit Exports

Exports from Uganda

For the third consecutive year, Uganda recorded growth in overseas shipments of fruits, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, fruit exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for fruit exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, fruit exports to Kenya exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), fivefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (X% per year) and the UK (X% per year).

In value terms, Kenya ($X), the UK ($X) and Qatar ($X) constituted the largest markets for fruit exported from Uganda worldwide, with a combined X% share of total exports.

Kenya, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average fruit export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Sudan (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fruit Imports

Imports into Uganda

In 2022, supplies from abroad of fruits decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, fruit imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) were the main suppliers of fruit imports to Uganda, together comprising X% of total imports. Swaziland and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Turkey ($X per ton) and Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
