In 2021, approx. X units of plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles were exported from the United States; rising by 26% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 59%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, spectacle plastic frame exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -16.1% against 2017 indices. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Canada (X units), Mexico (X units) and Italy (X units) were the main destinations of spectacle plastic frame exports from the United States, together accounting for 74% of total exports. The Netherlands, Israel, Hong Kong SAR, Brazil, Thailand, South Korea, Australia and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +53.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for plastic frames and mountings for spectacles and goggles exports from the United States, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada stood at +4.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+11.4% per year) and Italy (+18.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average spectacle plastic frame export price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, spectacle plastic frame imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of spectacle plastic frame to the United States, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, spectacle plastic frame imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +8.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+8.2% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+16.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest spectacle plastic frame suppliers to the United States were China ($X), Italy ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese) and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 2.7%.
Among the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +63.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average spectacle plastic frame import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild reduction. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
