Market Size for Motorcycles, Scooters And Side-Cars in the U.S.

The U.S. motorcycle, scooter and side-car market rose rapidly to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Production of Motorcycles, Scooters And Side-Cars in the U.S.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car production expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Motorcycle, scooter and side-car production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars, when their volume increased by 32% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Canada (X units) was the main destination for motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports from the United States, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, motorcycle, scooter and side-car exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X units), fourfold. Australia (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada totaled +9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-3.6% per year) and Australia (-5.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for motorcycle, scooter and side-car exported from the United States were Canada ($X), Japan ($X) and Australia ($X), together accounting for 50% of total exports. Belgium, the Netherlands, China, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, Lithuania, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average motorcycle, scooter and side-car export price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 9.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Motorcycles, Scooters And Side-Cars

Imports into the U.S.

In 2021, approx. X units of motorcycles, scooters and side-cars were imported into the United States; with a decrease of -17% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 276%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +30.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest motorcycle, scooter and side-car supplier to the United States, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, motorcycle, scooter and side-car imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), more than tenfold. Thailand (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +35.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+39.3% per year) and Thailand (+7.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the largest motorcycle, scooter and side-car suppliers to the United States, together accounting for 57% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 11%.

Among the main suppliers, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +39.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average motorcycle, scooter and side-car import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, faced a abrupt decline. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
