Bentonite Market Size in the U.S.

After three years of growth, the U.S. bentonite market decreased by -X% to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2007 to 2019: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. The U.S. exports peaked at X tons in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bentonite exports contracted sharply to $X in 2019. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

India was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons), China (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) - together made up X% of total exports.

From 2007 to 2019, average annual rates of growth with regard to bentonite exports from India stood at +X%. At the same time, Greece (+X%), Azerbaijan (+X%), Turkey (+X%), Slovakia (+X%), the Czech Republic (+X%) and the Netherlands (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2019. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-X%), China (-X%) and Cyprus (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+X p.p.), Turkey (+X p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2007-2019, the share of Italy (-X p.p.), Cyprus (-X p.p.) and China (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bentonite supplying countries from the U.S. were Turkey ($X), India ($X) and China ($X), with a combined X% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Turkey saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2019, the bentonite export price in the U.S. amounted to $X per ton, waning by -X% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2019: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last twelve years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2019, purchases abroad of bentonite decreased by -X% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bentonite imports shrank to $X in 2019. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The U.S. imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of bentonite imports in 2019 were Germany (X tons), Canada (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Russia (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), the UK (X tons), Japan (X tons) and France (X tons), together reaching X% of total import. Italy (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Canada ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2019, with a combined X% share of total imports. Japan, Thailand, France, the UK, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Russia, Malaysia and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X terms of the main importing countries, Thailand saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The bentonite import price in the U.S. stood at $X per ton in 2019, with an increase of X% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the import price increased by X% year-to-year. The U.S. import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
