In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite production shrank to $X in 2021. In general, production, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 535%. Artificial and colloidal graphite production peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports from the U.S.

In 2021, overseas shipments of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 26%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of artificial and colloidal graphite exports from the United States, together comprising 59% of total exports. France, South Korea, Italy, the UK, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Poland, India and Saudi Arabia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest markets for artificial and colloidal graphite exported from the United States worldwide, together accounting for 40% of total exports. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Japan, India, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average artificial and colloidal graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 32%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+10.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.

Artificial and colloidal graphite imports into the United States surged to X tons in 2021, growing by 60% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of artificial and colloidal graphite to the United States, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, artificial and colloidal graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Mexico (X tons), twofold. Norway (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at -4.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+20.4% per year) and Norway (+5.0% per year).

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+25.7% per year) and Japan (-2.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average artificial and colloidal graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -24.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
