Activated Carbon Market Size in the U.S.
The U.S. activated carbon market shrank markedly to $X in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Activated carbon consumption peaked at $X in 2019, and then fell dramatically in the following year.
Activated Carbon Production in the U.S.
In value terms, activated carbon production dropped rapidly to $X in 2020. In general, production, however, showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
Activated Carbon Exports
Exports from the U.S.
In 2020, overseas shipments of activated carbon decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.
In value terms, activated carbon exports declined to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tonnes), Canada (X tonnes) and Mexico (X tonnes) were the main destinations of activated carbon exports from the United States, with a combined X% share of total exports. China, Japan, the UK, South Korea, the Netherlands, Singapore, India, Brazil and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Singapore, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Canada ($X) and Belgium ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for activated carbon exported from the United States worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports. China, Japan, South Korea, the UK, Singapore, India, the Netherlands, Brazil and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X the main countries of destination, China recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2020, the average activated carbon export price amounted to $X per tonne, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated buoyant growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, activated carbon export price decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Activated Carbon Imports
Imports into the U.S.
In 2020, overseas purchases of activated carbon decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2019, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, activated carbon imports reduced sharply to $X in 2020. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
India (X tonnes), Sri Lanka (X tonnes) and Australia (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of activated carbon imports to the United States, together comprising X% of total imports.
From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Australia (+X% per year), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest activated carbon suppliers to the United States, with a combined X% share of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Canada, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico and Germany, which together accounted for a further X (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2020, the average activated carbon import price amounted to $X per tonne, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per tonne), while the price for Mexico ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
