Potato Market Size in Turkey

The Turkish potato market shrank slightly to $X in 2020, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Turkey

In value terms, potato production declined sharply to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in Turkey amounted to X tonnes per ha in 2020, growing by X% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 when the yield increased by X% y-o-y. The potato yield peaked in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, overseas shipments of potatoes decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato exports fell remarkably to $X in 2020. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2019, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tonnes), Syrian Arab Republic (X tonnes) and the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) were the main destinations of potato exports from Turkey, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Iraq ($X), Syrian Arab Republic ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest markets for potato exported from Turkey worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

The United Arab Emirates recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average potato export price amounted to $X per tonne, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of X% y-o-y. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iraq, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Turkey

In 2020, overseas purchases of potatoes increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted slight growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports rose remarkably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, the Netherlands (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Turkey, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tonnes), fourfold. Egypt (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+X% per year) and Egypt (-X% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Turkey, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by France ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+X% per year) and Germany (-X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average potato import price amounted to $X per tonne, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per tonne), while the price for Egypt ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
