Exports from Turkey

In 2022, overseas shipments of frozen cuts of turkey decreased by -5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen turkey cut exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for frozen turkey cut exports from Turkey, with a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, frozen turkey cut exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Jordan (X tons), twofold. Benin (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United Arab Emirates stood at +21.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Jordan (+22.6% per year) and Benin (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for frozen turkey cut exported from Turkey were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Jordan ($X) and Kuwait ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports. Benin, Lebanon, Guinea, Venezuela, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Iraq and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Lebanon, with a CAGR of +56.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average frozen turkey cut export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lebanon ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of frozen cuts of turkey decreased by 0% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 564% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen turkey cut imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 425%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of frozen turkey cut to Turkey, accounting for a 57% share of total imports.
