In 2021, the Turkish fresh chicken cut market decreased by -5.1% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Fresh Chicken Cut Exports

Exports from Turkey

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken, when their volume decreased by -16.4% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 145%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 116%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Iraq (X tons) was the main destination for fresh chicken cut exports from Turkey, with a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh chicken cut exports to Iraq exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Syrian Arab Republic (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Iraq was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+28.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+4.0% per year).

In value terms, Iraq ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for fresh or chilled cuts of chicken exports from Turkey, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Syrian Arab Republic ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Iraq totaled +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Syrian Arab Republic (+21.4% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+8.8% per year).

The average fresh chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+38.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Turkey

In 2021, fresh chicken cut imports into Turkey soared to X tons, picking up by 342% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 26,744% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 37,482%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
