For the third year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in overseas shipments of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread, which increased by 12% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports from Turkey, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +34.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+11.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+51.0% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread exports from Turkey, comprising 30% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Iraq ($X), with an 8.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at +26.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (+9.0% per year) and the United States (+14.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average export price for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Crispbread, Rusks and Toasted Bread
Imports into Turkey
For the third year in a row, Turkey recorded growth in overseas purchases of crispbread, rusks and toasted bread, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports posted a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 60%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Sweden (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Greece (X tons) were the main suppliers of crispbread, rusk and toasted bread imports to Turkey, together comprising 89% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +59.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Sweden ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest crispbread, rusk and toasted bread suppliers to Turkey, together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Greece, the Netherlands, the UK and Poland, which together accounted for a further 9.6%.
Among the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +52.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average import price for crispbread, rusks and toasted bread amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
