The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Germany (X tonnes) was the main destination for cigarettes containing tobacco exports from the UK, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ireland (X tonnes), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Japan (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ireland (-X% per year) and Japan (-X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for cigarettes containing tobacco exported from the UK were Ireland ($X), Falkland Islands (Malvinas) ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising X% of total exports.

Japan recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ireland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, overseas purchases of cigarettes containing tobacco were finally on the rise to reach X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked in 2020 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2020, Poland (X tonnes) constituted the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplier to the UK, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Romania (X tonnes), sixfold.
