In 2021, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 317% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 356%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X tons) was the main destination for fresh chicken cut exports from Thailand, accounting for a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, fresh chicken cut exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cambodia (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR totaled +38.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+110.7% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-25.9% per year).

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the key foreign market for fresh or chilled cuts of chicken exports from Thailand, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 7.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +8.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+114.0% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-31.9% per year).

The average fresh chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -24.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 115%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+43.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2019, purchases abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken increased by 365% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2019. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 178%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Egypt (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh chicken cut imports to Thailand, with a combined 85% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of 0.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Egypt ($X) and Myanmar ($X) constituted the largest fresh chicken cut suppliers to Thailand, with a combined 76% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Myanmar, with a CAGR of 0.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
