Asparagus Market Size in Thailand

In 2020, shipments abroad of asparagus was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tonnes) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Thailand, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tonnes), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by South Korea (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (+X% per year) and South Korea (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for asparagus exported from Thailand were South Korea ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Japan ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Australia and Qatar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, the average asparagus export price amounted to $X per tonne, declining by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then fell significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, supplies from abroad of asparagus decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports dropped significantly to $X in 2020. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. In value terms, Peru ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest asparagus suppliers to Thailand, together comprising X% of total imports.
