Exports from Tanzania
For the third year in a row, Tanzania recorded decline in overseas shipments of roots and tubers, which decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, root and tuber exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for root and tuber exports from Tanzania, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, root and tuber exports to Uganda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uganda amounted to X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Kenya (X% per year).
In value terms, Uganda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for roots and tubers exports from Tanzania, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burundi ($X), with a X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Uganda stood at X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Kenya (X% per year).

In 2022, the average root and tuber export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Tanzania
In 2022, supplies from abroad of roots and tubers decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of X%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, root and tuber imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Burundi (X tons) was the main supplier of root and tuber to Tanzania, with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark (X tons), with a X% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Burundi amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (X% per year) and the Netherlands (X% per year).
