After five years of decline, overseas shipments of magnesium increased by X% to X tonnes in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The exports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tonnes), Poland (X tonnes) and Germany (X tonnes) were the main destinations of magnesium exports from Switzerland, with a combined X% share of total exports. Romania lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further X 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (+X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for magnesium exported from Switzerland worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. In 2021, supplies from abroad of magnesium increased by X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tonnes) constituted the largest magnesium supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, magnesium imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tonnes), twofold. Israel (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-X% per year) and Israel (+X% per year).
