Exports from Switzerland
After five years of decline, overseas shipments of magnesium increased by X% to X tonnes in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The exports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, magnesium exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, faced a abrupt downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tonnes), Poland (X tonnes) and Germany (X tonnes) were the main destinations of magnesium exports from Switzerland, with a combined X% share of total exports. Romania lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further X 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Romania (+X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for magnesium exported from Switzerland worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports. Romania lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further X, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average magnesium export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, falling by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2021, the highest prices were recorded for prices to the United States ($X per tonne) and Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per tonne) and Germany ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of magnesium increased by X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Czech Republic (X tonnes) constituted the largest magnesium supplier to Switzerland, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, magnesium imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tonnes), twofold. Israel (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-X% per year) and Israel (+X% per year).
In value terms, the largest magnesium suppliers to Switzerland were the Czech Republic ($X), China ($X) and Israel ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Germany and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X the main suppliers, Germany, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average magnesium import price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, jumping by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per tonne), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+X%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
