Dolomite Market Size in Switzerland

The Swiss dolomite market rose sharply to $X in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In value terms, dolomite exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 135%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Costa Rica (X tons) was the main destination for dolomite exports from Switzerland, accounting for a 41% share of total exports. Moreover, dolomite exports to Costa Rica exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sweden (X tons), with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Costa Rica amounted to +214.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+5,576.4% per year) and Sweden (-4.0% per year).

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chalk and dolomite exports from Switzerland, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Costa Rica totaled +193.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-14.2% per year) and Austria (+17.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average dolomite export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -28.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 38%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+80.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Switzerland

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chalk and dolomite increased by 3.7% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of dolomite imports to Switzerland, with a combined 93% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +51.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
