Malt Market Size in Sweden

In 2020, the Swedish malt market increased by X% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Malt consumption peaked at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

Exports from Sweden

For the sixth year in a row, Sweden recorded growth in overseas shipments of malt, which increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Exports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, malt exports stood at $X in 2020. In general, exports showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tonnes), Brazil (X tonnes) and Norway (X tonnes) were the main destinations of malt exports from Sweden, together accounting for X% of total exports. Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Ghana (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for malt exported from Sweden were the UK ($X), Brazil ($X) and Norway ($X), together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Ghana, which together accounted for a further X terms of the main countries of destination, Ghana (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2020, the average malt export price amounted to $X per tonne, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2009 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In 2020, the countries with the highest prices were Nicaragua ($X per tonne) and the UK ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per tonne) and Costa Rica ($X per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Sweden

In 2020, the amount of malt imported into Sweden totaled X tonnes, with an increase of X% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports totaled $X in 2020. Overall, imports showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Denmark (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Sweden, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (X tonnes), sixfold. Germany (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Denmark totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (+X% per year) and Germany (+X% per year).

In value terms, Denmark ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Sweden, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Finland ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a X% share.

The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per tonne), while the price for Denmark ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
