Exports from Sweden

In 2021, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -80.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a precipitous decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,609% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +60.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 45%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 24%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Latvia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh whole chicken imports to Sweden, together comprising 73% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +107.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Latvia ($X), Poland ($X) and Lithuania ($X) were the largest fresh whole chicken suppliers to Sweden, together accounting for 71% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Latvia, with a CAGR of +94.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
