Carbonate Market Size in Sri Lanka

In 2021, the Sri Lankan carbonate market increased by 8.5% to $X, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +61.4% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports from Sri Lanka

In 2021, shipments abroad of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 126%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate exports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 128% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Seychelles (X tons) was the main destination for carbonate exports from Sri Lanka, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, carbonate exports to Seychelles exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Qatar (X tons), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Seychelles stood at +90.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Qatar (0.0% per year) and Australia (+84.4% per year).

In value terms, Seychelles ($X) remains the key foreign market for carbonate exports from Sri Lanka, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Seychelles totaled +71.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+85.9% per year) and Qatar (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average carbonate export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -27.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 2.6%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Sri Lanka

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of carbonates and peroxocarbonates, when their volume decreased by -6.3% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 28%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, carbonate imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +64.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Sri Lanka, with a combined 57% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +80.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carbonate suppliers to Sri Lanka were India ($X), Bulgaria ($X) and Pakistan ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +81.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
