In 2021, the Spanish glass fibre filament market increased by 1.3% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. Glass Fibre Filament Exports

Exports from Spain

In 2021, exports of glass fibre filaments from Spain declined modestly to X tons, standing approx. at 2020 figures. Overall, total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +14.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fibre filament exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +23.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of glass fibre filament exports from Spain, together comprising 35% of total exports. These countries were followed by the UK, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, Brazil, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 50%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +41.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average glass fibre filament export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of glass fibre filaments increased by 7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -13.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, glass fibre filament imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Belgium (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of glass fibre filament imports to Spain, together comprising 56% of total imports. Italy, China, Bahrain, Slovakia and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +43.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
