In value terms, clay exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Algeria (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of clay exports from Spain, together accounting for 56% of total exports. Portugal, the Netherlands, the UK, Belgium, Germany and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +21.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, France ($X), Italy ($X) and Portugal ($X) constituted the largest markets for clay exported from Spain worldwide, together comprising 38% of total exports. Algeria, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Belgium and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
Among the main countries of destination, India, with a CAGR of +17.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 19%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+9.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Spain
In 2021, purchases abroad of clays was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, clay imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest clay supplier to Spain, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, clay imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X tons), with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine stood at +13.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+26.0% per year) and the UK (-3.0% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of clay to Spain, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 7.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine stood at +13.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+3.7% per year) and Turkey (+25.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average clay import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
