Roasted Coffee Market Size in Southern Asia

The South Asian roasted coffee market rose modestly to $X in 2021, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -2.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Roasted Coffee Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, roasted coffee production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -3.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of roasted coffee were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, roasted coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 262%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from India (X tons), together reaching 98% of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted coffee exports, with a CAGR of +19.4% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +3.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest roasted coffee supplier in Southern Asia.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in India totaled +18.6%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -35.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 60%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to -0.6% per year.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of roasted coffee, when their volume increased by 36% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, roasted coffee imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -1.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Maldives represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Pakistan (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), India (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), together generating a 54% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to roasted coffee imports into Maldives stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Pakistan (+24.3%), Bangladesh (+20.1%) and Sri Lanka (+15.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-3.2%) and Afghanistan (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh increased by +15, +15, +7.4 and +4.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Maldives ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted coffee in Southern Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Maldives amounted to +12.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+17.4% per year) and Pakistan (+26.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
