In 2021, shipments abroad of oxides of boron and boric acids decreased by -28% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +16.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +32.6% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of oxides of boron and boric acids, namely India, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oxides of boron and boric acids exports, with a CAGR of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) also remains the largest boron oxide and boric acid supplier in Southern Asia.

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 60% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for India.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for India amounted to +4.6% per year.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of oxides of boron and boric acids increased by 30% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 37%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) represented the largest importer of oxides of boron and boric acids, constituting 52% of total imports. Pakistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 32% share, followed by Bangladesh (13%). Sri Lanka (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Bangladesh ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +13.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild descent. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Bangladesh ($X per ton) and Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
