In 2021, the South Asian MDF market decreased by -4.4% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of MDF, when their volume increased by 27% to X cubic meters. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, MDF exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, India (X cubic meters) represented the key exporter of MDF, generating 52% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X cubic meters) and Pakistan (X cubic meters), together generating a 48% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +53.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest MDF supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in India totaled +41.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (-19.9% per year) and Pakistan (-14.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Southern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per cubic meter), while Sri Lanka ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of MDF decreased by -19.2% to X cubic meters, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, MDF imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India represented the main importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which finished at 47% of total imports. Sri Lanka (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bangladesh (X cubic meters), Pakistan (X cubic meters) and Afghanistan (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total imports. Nepal (X cubic meters) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to MDF imports into India stood at -8.6%. At the same time, Nepal (+26.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.3% from 2012-2021. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Afghanistan (-6.5%) and Pakistan (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal increased by +9, +5.6 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per cubic meter), while Bangladesh ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
