Leek Production in Southern Asia

In value terms, leek production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Sri Lanka (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in Southern Asia, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, leek production in Sri Lanka exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Pakistan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Sri Lanka amounted to X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Pakistan (X% per year) and Bangladesh (X% per year).

In 2022, the average leek yield in Southern Asia rose markedly to X tons per ha, surging by X% against the previous year. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Bangladesh (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), India (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) represented the major exporter of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Southern Asia, mixing up X% of total export. Sri Lanka (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Afghanistan (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a modest expansion. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
