The third position in this ranking was held by Bangladesh (X tons), with a 21% share.

Fresh Whole Chicken Exports

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2021, fresh whole chicken exports in Southern Asia soared to X tons, surging by 105% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep contraction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Pakistan (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together comprising 97% of total exports. India (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of fresh or chilled whole chickens, when their volume increased by 7.4% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 281% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports rose to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 173%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Bhutan represented the key importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Afghanistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total imports. Maldives (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Bhutan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled whole chickens imports, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Maldives (+13.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Pakistan (-2.7%) and Afghanistan (-42.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bhutan (+64 p.p.), Pakistan (+18 p.p.) and Maldives (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Afghanistan (-84.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In Bhutan, fresh whole chicken imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Afghanistan (-40.4% per year) and Pakistan (-5.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
