The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 32%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were India (X tons), Pakistan (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons), with a combined 87% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +7.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Fresh Chicken Cut Exports

Exports in Southern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken were exported in Southern Asia; with an increase of 82% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 190%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bangladesh represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 47% of total exports. India (X tons) took a 31% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Pakistan (17%) and Sri Lanka (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +30.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest fresh chicken cut supplying countries in Southern Asia were India ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Bangladesh ($X), together comprising 88% of total exports. These countries were followed by Sri Lanka, which accounted for a further 12%.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +37.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -27.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 48%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+15.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2022, imports of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken in Southern Asia fell slightly to X tons, waning by -3.3% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 119%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Afghanistan represented the key importer of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken in Southern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 65% of total imports in 2022. Bhutan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Maldives (X tons). All these countries together held near 28% share of total imports. The following importers - Nepal (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons) and Bangladesh (X tons) - each recorded a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fresh chicken cut imports into Afghanistan stood at -14.2%. At the same time, Maldives (+26.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Maldives emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nepal (-5.7%), Bhutan (-6.7%), Bangladesh (-9.5%) and Sri Lanka (-18.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Bhutan, Maldives and Bangladesh increased by +11, +4.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled cuts of chicken in Southern Asia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bhutan ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Maldives, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Afghanistan totaled -10.8%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bhutan (-5.6% per year) and Maldives (+23.3% per year).
