In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the South Asian fertilizer market, when its value decreased by -5.1% to $X. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the amount of fertilizers exported in Southern Asia fell dramatically to X tons, reducing by -32.3% against 2020 figures. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fertilizer exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Bangladesh (X tons), constituting a 25% share of total exports.

India was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fertilizers exports, with a CAGR of -2.6% from 2012 to 2021. Bangladesh (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India increased by +23 percentage points.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest fertilizer supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bangladesh ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

In India, fertilizer exports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-2.4%).

Fertilizer Imports

Imports in Southern Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fertilizers decreased by -21.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, fertilizer imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) represented the largest importer of fertilizers, creating 79% of total imports. Bangladesh (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Pakistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 18% share of total imports. Sri Lanka (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+2.6%), Pakistan (+1.7%) and Sri Lanka (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +2.6% from 2012-2021. The shares of the largest importers remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fertilizers in Southern Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with an 8.6% share.

In India, fertilizer imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Pakistan (+2.6% per year) and Bangladesh (-1.9% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
