Pakistan was the major exporter of cement clinker in Southern Asia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), making up a 19% share of total exports.
Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cement clinker exports, with a CAGR of +58.9% from 2012 to 2021. India (-1.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Pakistan increased by +75 percentage points.
In value terms, Pakistan ($X) remains the largest cement clinker supplier in Southern Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
In Pakistan, cement clinker exports increased at an average annual rate of +53.3% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Southern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Pakistan amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (-2.9%).

Imports in Southern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of cement clinker were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 32%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cement clinker imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Bangladesh dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 84% of total imports in 2021. Sri Lanka (X tons) held an 8.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by India (6.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cement clinker imports into Bangladesh stood at +8.4%. At the same time, India (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Southern Asia, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sri Lanka (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Bangladesh (+8.7 p.p.) and India (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Sri Lanka (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cement clinker in Southern Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Bangladesh amounted to +1.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-7.7% per year) and India (+6.2% per year).

The import price in Southern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 7.6%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
