After two years of growth, the Southeast Asian wood charcoal market decreased by -3.5% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate slight growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Wood Charcoal Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, wood charcoal production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, shipments abroad of wood charcoal decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) represented the major exporter of wood charcoal, generating 50% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by the Philippines (13%), Myanmar (7.7%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (7.4%). Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood charcoal exports from Indonesia stood at +7.4%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+37.3%), Vietnam (+35.9%) and the Philippines (+29.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-2.1%) and Myanmar (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+13 p.p.), the Philippines (+13 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar saw its share reduced by -3.1%, -3.8% and -24.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest wood charcoal supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 14% share.

In Indonesia, wood charcoal exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+38.0% per year) and the Philippines (+35.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 17% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood charcoal export price increased by +30.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of wood charcoal was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 74%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held near 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +18.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 10% against the previous year. Import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wood charcoal import price increased by +108.2% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
