Exports in South-Eastern Asia

Ethylene polymer bag exports rose slightly to X tons in 2022, increasing by 3.8% against the year before. Total exports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -3.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 20%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, ethylene polymer bag exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +41.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Vietnam represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 49% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Malaysia (15%) and Indonesia (8.2%). The Philippines (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene exports, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.2%) and the Philippines (-3.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam increased by +24 percentage points.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 14%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene increased by 3.9% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 25%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, ethylene polymer bag imports expanded to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +118.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest levels of ethylene polymer bag imports in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons), together reaching 98% of total import.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +38.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
