Pulses Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Myanmar totaled +X%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Viet Nam (+X% per year) and Thailand (+X% per year).

The average pulses yield expanded modestly to X tonnes per ha in 2020, picking up by X% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the yield increased by X% y-o-y. The level of yield peaked in 2020 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The pulses harvested area amounted to X ha in 2020, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pulses production reached the maximum at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pulses production was Myanmar (X tonnes), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, pulses production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Viet Nam (X tonnes), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Thailand (X tonnes), with a X% share.

In Myanmar, pulses production expanded at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007-2020. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Viet Nam (+X% per year) and Thailand (+X% per year).

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2020, overseas shipments of pulses increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. From 2013 to 2020, the growth exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pulses exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. In general, exports posted a noticeable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of $X. From 2013 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

Myanmar prevails in pulses exports structure, recording X tonnes, which was near X% of total exports in 2020. The following exporters - Indonesia (X tonnes) and Thailand (X tonnes) - each reached a X% share of total exports.

Exports from Myanmar increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Indonesia (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020. By contrast, Thailand (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Myanmar (+X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2007-2020, the share of Thailand (-X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. The volume of import peaked at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pulses imports dropped modestly to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of pulses, namely Viet Nam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tonnes), making up an X% share of total imports. Singapore (X tonnes) occupied a little share of total imports.

Viet Nam recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pulses import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per tonne in 2020, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the last thirteen years, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.
