Other Papers Packaging Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of other papers packaging decreased by -20.3% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, other papers packaging exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), together committing a 28% share of total exports.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+45.3%), Thailand (+11.7%) and Indonesia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +45.3% from 2012-2022. Vietnam (+8.3 p.p.) and Thailand (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -7.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest other papers packaging supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 6.3% share.

In Malaysia, other papers packaging exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+3.9% per year) and Vietnam (+36.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of other papers packaging imported in South-Eastern Asia declined modestly to X tons, reducing by -2.2% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, other papers packaging imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +34.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) dominates imports structure, together creating 75% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8% share, followed by Malaysia (7%) and the Philippines (4.8%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +6.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
