After two years of decline, the Southeast Asian groundnut oil market increased by 3.3% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption showed a slight setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, groundnut oil production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of groundnut oil decreased by -27.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnut oil exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 46% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (22%) and Vietnam (4.7%). Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +15.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest groundnut oil supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -11.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of groundnut oil, when their volume increased by 22% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, groundnut oil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Timor-Leste (X tons), together making up a 44% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Timor-Leste (with a CAGR of +94.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 96% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Timor-Leste, which accounted for a further 0.8%.

Timor-Leste, with a CAGR of +61.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Timor-Leste ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
