Garlic Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, after seven years of growth, there was decline in the Southeast Asian garlic market, when its value decreased by X% to $X. The total consumption indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by X% against 2014 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
Garlic Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, garlic production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Myanmar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of garlic production, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, garlic production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), threefold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (X% per year) and Indonesia (X% per year).
The average garlic yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by X%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of garlic production in South-Eastern Asia reduced to X ha, dropping by X% compared with 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production reached the maximum at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Garlic Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, overseas shipments of garlic increased by X% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, garlic exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a measured expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Malaysia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Singapore (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to garlic exports from Malaysia stood at X%. At the same time, Thailand (X%) and Singapore (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (X p.p.), Malaysia (X p.p.) and Thailand (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest garlic supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (X% per year) and Singapore (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
For the third consecutive year, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of garlic, which increased by X% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, garlic imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Indonesia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached X% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (X%). Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (X%), Malaysia (X%) and Singapore (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Vietnam (X p.p.) and Malaysia (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand and Indonesia saw its share reduced by X% and X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
